Macular degeneration affects more people than glaucoma and cataracts combined. More than 10 million individuals in the United States are currently battling macular degeneration. Although incurable, effective treatment options are available to preserve your sight by halting the damage and preventing further vision loss.● Blue Iris Color (Blue Eyes)● Caucasian Race● Family History● Current or Former Smoker
Screening for Age-Related Macular Degeneration
It is very important to have a macular degeneration screening on a regular basis. It is particularly important if you have any of the risk factors or are more than 55 years old. However, please note that macular degeneration can affect anyone from any background at any time. We still do not have a definitive explanation for what causes AMD. Scientists believe that it is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental conditions.
Progression of Macular Degeneration
When the progression of macular degeneration proceeds unabated, it can result in blindness. In the early stages, there are no symptoms whatsoever. As time goes on, the affected individual will typically begin to notice that their vision begins to become “wavy” or blurry. Eventually, the central vision is completely lost, leaving only a fraction of the peripheral vision, which is far inferior to central vision.
Macular Degeneration Screening
The screening is painless. It includes a dilated eye examination, analysis of visual acuity, and meticulous examination of the interior surface of the eyeball, including the macula and retinal areas.
One of the first signs of macular degeneration is the presence of drusen (yellow deposits beneath the retina). As the disease progresses, pigment changes of the retina become evident to the trained eye of a professional ophthalmologist. By the time vision loss is noticed by the patient, macular degeneration is easily diagnosed. Further testing will be necessary to determine the best treatment method to preserve your vision.
Macular Degeneration Treatment Options
It is important to receive regular screening for macular degeneration. If the disease is caught before scarring and significant damage occurs, vision can usually be preserved and blindness prevented. Treatment options for this disease include:
